The Catalyst Collective Returns to Chisomo Shelter: Empowering Girls Through Menstrual Hygiene Education

On Saturday, April 26, 2025, The Catalyst Collective once again visited Chisomo Shelter, an orphanage in Linda, as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting underprivileged girls. This visit was particularly special as we focused on menstrual health and hygiene, a critical yet often overlooked issue affecting young girls in marginalized communities.

A Day of Giving and Learning

Our team had the privilege of donating:

- Assorted sanitary pads (ensuring a sustainable supply for the girls)

- Assorted girls' clothing (to help with their daily needs)

But beyond material donations, we engaged in an interactive session with 12 girls (a number that varies slightly depending on the school year) to discuss menstrual hygiene, body changes, and self-care practices.

Breaking the Silence on Menstruation

In many communities, menstruation remains a taboo subject, leading to misinformation, shame, and even school absenteeism among girls. Our session aimed to:

Educate – We provided clear, age-appropriate information on menstrual health.

Normalize – We encouraged open discussions to help girls feel confident and unashamed.

Empower – We shared tips on hygiene, reusable pad options, and managing discomfort.

The girls asked thoughtful questions, from "How often should I change my pad?" to "Is it normal to have cramps?"—proving just how crucial these conversations are.

Why This Matters

Access to menstrual products and education isn’t just about hygiene—it’s about dignity, education, and equality. Many girls miss school simply because they lack pads or feel embarrassed. By providing both resources and knowledge, we help keep them in school and confident in their bodies.

Our Gratitude

We extend our deepest thanks to:

- The caregivers at Chisomo Shelter for their unwavering support.

- Our donors and volunteers who made this outreach possible.

- The brave and bright girls who shared their experiences and dreams with us.

How can you help?
