Empowering Change: International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

On February 6th, the world unites to observe the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). This day serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to eradicate a practice that violates the fundamental rights of millions of girls and women worldwide. As members of the Catalyst Collective, we stand in solidarity with survivors, activists, and organizations working tirelessly to end FGM and create a future where every girl can live free from harm and discrimination.

Understanding FGM: A Global Human Rights Issue

Female genital mutilation refers to the partial or total removal of external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is a deeply rooted cultural practice in some communities, often justified by tradition, religion, or social norms. However, FGM has no health benefits and can lead to severe physical, psychological, and emotional consequences, including chronic pain, infections, complications during childbirth, and trauma.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone FGM, and an estimated 4 million girls are at risk each year. While the practice is most prevalent in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, it is a global issue affecting diaspora communities worldwide. FGM is a violation of human rights, gender equality, and bodily autonomy, and it perpetuates cycles of inequality and harm.

The Power of Collective Action

The International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM is not just a day of awareness but a call to action. It is a day to amplify the voices of survivors, challenge harmful norms, and advocate for policies and programs that protect girls and women. The Catalyst Collective recognizes that ending FGM requires a multifaceted approach, including:

1. Education and Awareness: Breaking the silence around FGM is crucial. Communities must be educated about the dangers of the practice and empowered to abandon it. Open dialogues, workshops, and media campaigns can help shift attitudes and foster understanding.

2. Empowering Women and Girls: FGM is deeply tied to gender inequality. By investing in girls' education, economic opportunities, and leadership development, we can challenge the systems that perpetuate harmful practices and create pathways for empowerment.

3. Strengthening Legal Frameworks: Governments must enact and enforce laws that criminalise FGM and protect girls at risk. Legal measures, combined with community engagement, can create an environment where FGM is no longer tolerated.

4. Supporting Survivors: Survivors of FGM need access to comprehensive healthcare, counselling, and support services. By addressing their physical and emotional needs, we can help them heal and reclaim their lives.

5. Global Solidarity: Ending FGM requires collaboration across borders. Governments, NGOs, healthcare providers, and grassroots organizations must work together to share resources, knowledge, and strategies.

The Role of the Catalyst Collective

As a community dedicated to driving positive change, the Catalyst Collective has a vital role to play in the fight against FGM. We can use our platforms to raise awareness, advocate for policy changes, and support organizations working on the ground. By amplifying the voices of survivors and activists, we can help shift narratives and inspire action.

Moreover, we must challenge the societal norms that perpetuate gender-based violence and inequality. FGM is not just a women's issue; it is a human issue that requires the engagement of all genders. Men and boys, in particular, have a critical role to play as allies and advocates for change.

A Future Free from FGM

The International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM is a reminder that change is possible. Over the past decades, significant progress has been made in reducing the prevalence of FGM in some regions. Communities are coming together to abandon the practice, and governments are taking steps to protect girls and women.

However, the work is far from over. As long as even one girl is at risk of FGM, we must continue to fight. Let us use this day to recommit ourselves to the cause, to stand with survivors, and to work toward a future where every girl can grow up free from violence and fear.

Together, we can end female genital mutilation. Together, we can create a world where every girl has the right to control her own body and destiny. Let us be the catalysts for change.

  1. Female genital mutilation has ZERO health benefits and is an extreme form of violence used to control girls/women. It causes lifelong health problems including (and not limited to) significant risks during childbirth, psychological trauma and in some cases even death

  2. It is mothers who take their daughters to have their clitoris cut off by another woman. It is done because men prefer to have a cut wife. We hold down our screaming five-year-old daughters and allow a woman to take a razor to her genitals because a man will prefer her that way.

  3. Imagine cutting off the glans of your penis
Imagine removing the most sensitive part of your sexual organ as a man

Imagine the excuse for this is to stop you from being promiscuous

    Now Stop imagining

This happens to over 200 million women in the world!
